Mayoral candidate and Ward 8 Councillor Rob Cooper announced today that, if elected Mayor, he will establish a Rural Action Representative within the Mayor’s Office and appoint former City Councillor Robert Pasuta to the role.
The Rural Action Representative will serve as a direct connection between rural communities and the Mayor’s Office — listening to residents, identifying local priorities and working across City
departments to address service and infrastructure deficiencies.
“Our rural communities deserve a direct voice at City Hall — and they deserve results,” said Cooper.
“Too often, residents raise an issue and are left wondering who is responsible, what is happening and when it will be resolved. This role will be responsible for helping turn those concerns into action.”
Pasuta brings decades of experience in rural communities. A long-time farmer and former City Councillor, he represented Ward 14 and brings first-hand knowledge of the infrastructure, agricultural and service challenges facing rural residents. He also served as Chair of the Hamilton Conservation Authority Board of Directors.
“Robert understands our rural communities because he has lived it, worked it and represented it,”
said Cooper. “He knows the communities, understands the issues and knows how City Hall works. I want that experience inside the Mayor’s Office, focused on getting results.”
The Rural Action Representative will have a clear mandate to:
Regularly engage with rural residents, farmers, businesses and community organizations.
Serve as a direct point of contact between rural communities and the Mayor’s Office. Identify service, infrastructure and other deficiencies affecting rural communities.
Work with City departments to advance priorities and follow issues through to resolution. Keep residents informed about issues they have raised and the actions being taken. Ensure rural priorities are represented in discussions and decisions at City Hall.
“Rural residents should know who is listening, who is responsible and what is being done,” said
Cooper. “This is about better communication, stronger representation and delivering real results for our rural communities.”
Cooper said the creation of the Rural Action Representative reflects his broader commitment to making City Hall more responsive and accountable to residents.
